How to Claim Insurance for Car Damage

Once you own a four-wheeler, driving it is fraught with risks, and insurance is there to protect you from them. Indian law makes third-party liability insurance mandatory for all car owners. This means you can’t drive your dream car if it’s not covered by third-party insurance.

However, this is minimum coverage and does not protect you from damage to your car. If you want to protect your car, you need to opt for your damage or comprehensive car insurance.

Claim Insurance for Car Damage

Based on the directive of the Insurance Regulatory Development Authority of India (IRDAI), a standalone own-damage policy was introduced in September 2019. This is a separate cover that protects your vehicle financially against damage caused by fire, accident, theft, or natural calamity. However, the policy is available only if your car has active third-party coverage.

To claim car insurance for car damage, follow the given steps:-

Notify your insurer

Inform your insurer immediately about the accident that caused damage to your car. It is important to do this within the stipulated time.

Lodge FIR

If your car gets damaged in a road accident or is stolen, you should immediately lodge an FIR.

Damage Assessment

Following your notification to the insurer, a surveyor on behalf of your insurer will visit the incident site and assess the extent and nature of the damage.

Report Evaluation

Your insurer will review the surveyor’s report and proceed with your claim accordingly.

Agreement

If you are submitting a cashless claim, the bills will be paid directly from the garage. In the event of a reimbursement claim, the insurer will review the estimated cost and actual bills provided by the surveyor and pay the amount to your account within 1 week.
