Gearing up for its 17th season, the Indian Premier League promises to be a bigger and better tournament than ever before. There is a possibility that not all the schedules may be revealed today, but there is a feeling that we may be just a month away from the biggest T20 carnival of Indian cricket.

After all, it seems like it was only last month that Ravindra Jadeja hit a four on the last ball to lead Chennai Super Kings to their fifth IPL title, but the fact is that it has been 8 months since that historic night in Ahmedabad. Guess that’s what IPL does – leaves a lasting impression.

The biggest hurdle for IPL 2024 was that the general elections were coming in between. This has happened twice before, and it led to scattered decisions. The 2009 edition was completely shifted to South Africa, while in 2014, the IPL was played in two parts – the first in the UAE and the second in India.

In 2019, the two competitions did not clash and hence the IPL, starting on March 23, was played entirely in India. Even this year, while there was speculation, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal clarified once and for all that the IPL will not be shifted abroad, but the full picture will emerge only when there is more clarity.

Mumbai Indians have a new captain in Hardik Pandya and Gujarat Titans have Shubman Gill. The Chennai Super Kings captain had said last year that winning the IPL in 2023 would have been the right time for him to retire, but he plans to come back for the last time ‘next year’. In all likelihood, this is Dhoni’s last season with a stellar performance for MSD.

Talking about CSK’s biggest rivals, Mumbai Indians have made headlines even before the start of the tournament. He created a stir on December 15, 2023, when he announced Hardik as the new captain of the franchise, replacing Rohit Sharma. The decision created a storm on social media with a large number of MI and other fans spamming their franchise’s timeline and expressing their displeasure.

But it is what it is. The team felt now was the right time to make a change for MI, who have been without a title for three seasons, and once Hardik was in the team, they knew who it was going to be. In fact, according to reports, the condition of Hardik’s return to MI was reportedly a guarantee of captaincy.

Apart from MI and CSK, the biggest factor for IPL 2024 is the auction, which took place on December 19, where Pat Cummins and Mitchell Marsh got the most money. The Australian fast bowling pair broke records, with Cummins becoming the first player to cross the 20-crore mark, and ultimately led to Sunrisers Hyderabad.

However, even before the news that Cummins’ record-breaking deal could reach all parts of the world, Starc bettered it, becoming the most expensive player ever, with KKR spending Rs 24.75 crore on him. Meanwhile, Harshal Patel emerged as India’s most expensive player, with Punjab Kings spending Rs 11.75 crore.
