Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 81 runs in match 9th of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 yesterday (6th April) at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
Kolkata elected to bat after losing the toss and ended their innings at 204/7 as Shardul Thakur scored 68 off just 29 balls. Varun Chakravarthy (4/15) then shone with the ball as RCB was bundled out for 123 in 17.4 overs.

KKR got off to a poor start and David Willey clean-bowled Venkatesh Iyer (3) and Mandeep Singh (0) in consecutive deliveries in the fourth over. Kolkata captain Nitish Rana also got out cheaply. He reverse-swept Michael Bracewell’s delivery to the keeper, scoring only one run.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz took care of one end and made a flurry of runs. He reaches a brilliant half-century, sweeping Karn Sharma for a maximum. His innings ended when he reverse-swept the leg-spinner at short third man. Andre Russell scored (0) and was dismissed in just one ball.

However, Thakur played a brilliant knock to put KKR on top. He hit three fours and a six in his first eight balls and was dismissed for 21 runs. In the 15th over, he targeted Michael Bracewell and hit him for sixes in a row. Thakur brings up his half-century in 20 balls by pulling Harshal Patel for a boundary.

Hits a few more big hits in the last over before getting dismissed trying to pick up Mohammad Siraj. At the other end, Rinku Singh also played a fine knock of 46 runs. Both added 103 runs for the sixth wicket to rescue KKR from the crisis of 89/5.

With the ball, Chakraborty took four wickets. Narine (2/16) and Suyash (3/30) also made an impact.

For RCB, Willey claimed 2/16 in his four overs and scored 20 not out.
